China’s retaliatory tariffs on U.S. imports now in effect
Shortly after tariffs on China imposed by U.S. President Donald Trump took effect on Tuesday, China's Finance Ministry said it would impose levies of 15 per cent on imports of U.S. coal and LNG and 10% per cent for crude oil as well as on farm equipment and some autos, which are now in effect.

7.6-magnitude earthquake shakes Caribbean islands
A magnitude-7.6 earthquake shook the Caribbean Sea southwest of the Cayman Islands on Saturday, according to the U.S. Geological Survey, and some islands and countries urged people near the coastline to move inland in case of a tsunami.

African leaders unite in call for ceasefire in eastern Congo
Leaders from eastern and southern Africa called for an immediate ceasefire in eastern Congo, where rebels are threatening to overthrow the Congolese government. Rwandan-backed M23 rebels have taken over towns near Congo's capital, putting the country's president at odds with Rwandan officials and other leaders.
