Edna O'Brien published more than 20 books, most of them novels and story collections, and would know fully what she called the "extremities of joy and sorrow, love, crossed love and unrequited love, success and failure, fame and slaughter."

How Trump's promise of mass deportations could affect Canada's border

Migrants walk along the highway through Suchiate, Chiapas state in southern Mexico, Sunday, July 21, 2024, during their journey north toward the U.S. border.

Past experience in 2017 shows that even fairly minor changes to the status of the 11 million undocumented immigrants believed to be living in the U.S. can drive large numbers to seek refuge in Canada. Trump's promise to deport millions of people if elected to a second term would likely trigger a bigger rush.
